Common Dog Care Mistakes

Dogs are much more than furry, four-legged roommates: they’re important parts of our lives and families. Most people know what Fido’s basic needs are: food, clean water, regular walks, and veterinary care are the most important ones. However, it can be easy to forget that dogs don’t think like us, and have their own specific care requirements. Read on as a Carmel, IN vet discusses some common dog care mistakes.

Not Enough Exercise

While every pooch has slightly different exercise needs, all dogs need some form of activity, even if it’s just a daily walk. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Lack of Veterinary Care

Make sure your pooch sees the vet regularly. As a puppy, Fido should be microchipped and spayed or neutered. You’ll also want to make sure your pooch is current on vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. If you notice any unusual behavior that could indicate sickness, contact your vet immediately.

Allowing Begging

We know, that adorable furry face can be hard to resist, but at the end of the day, begging is bad petiquette, and is a big contributing factor in skyrocketing doggy obesity rates. Don’t overindulge your pet!

Not Enough Toys/Stimulation

Dogs can get bored and restless with nothing to do. Make sure Fido has plenty of fun toys to play with. Change your pet’s playthings out regularly, so he doesn’t get bored with them.

Overgrown Nails

Long nails may seem minor, but they can be quite painful for dogs, and can cause or contribute to some bone/joint problems. If you are uneasy doing it yourself, just call us to schedule a pawdicure.

Lack of Dental Care

Doggy dental care is very important, but unfortunately, it is often overlooked. Fido should have his teeth checked by a vet at least once a year. Ask your vet for home care recommendations as well.

Inconsistent/Poor Training

Much of your canine pal’s behavior will depend on the amount of time and effort you put into training him. Consistency is very important here. Don’t let Fido snooze on the couch one day, and then reprimand him for it the next. Also, use the same phrases each time when training or reprimanding your pup. Last but not least, nip bad habits, like jumping on guests, in the bud.
