Kids and Pets Day Activities

Did you know that April 26th is National Kids and Pets Day? This may be the cutest unofficial holiday ever! More and more studies show that growing up with pets benefits children in many ways. Our animal friends not only make great cuddle buddies and playmates, they can teach children about love and loyalty, and comfort them in tough times. Studies even suggest that kids with pets have higher immune systems and fewer allergies! A Carmel, IN vet offers some great ways to celebrate this week below.

Drawing

Break out the crayons and construction paper! Have your kids draw some pictures of Fido or Fluffy.

Story Time

Do you read to your children? If so, choose animal-themed stories for this week’s selections. Bring Fido or Fluffy in for some cuddles as you’re reading.

DIY Toys

No matter what kind of pet you have, you’ll likely be able to find some super cute and creative ideas for DIY pet toys online. The kids can make a catnip sock mouse for Fluffy, or a braided rope toy for Fido.

Homemade Goodies

If there’s one thing our furry friends are enthusiastic about, it’s snacks. There are lots of great recipes online for homemade treats you can make for dogs and cats. For smaller pets, offer a healthy snack in a foraging toy. Just be sure to choose only ingredients that are healthy and safe for your pet. Ask your vet for nutritional recommendations.

Play Session

Our furry friends are quite playful! Your young ones can indulge Fido with a fun game of fetch, or dangle a toy mouse on a string for Fluffy. This will be fun for both your kids and your pet!

Photos

Get some great pictures of your kids and pet together. Shoot at dusk or dawn to capture that beautiful golden light, or take a serene black-and-white photo and frame it.

Movie Night

Settle in for a fun, animal-themed movie. Include Fluffy and Fido by offering cuddles, ear scritches, and/or belly rubs while the movie is playing.

Let Love Grow

Pets truly enrich our lives with their love and loyalty, funny antics, and unwavering devotion. Talk to your kids about our animal friends, and how important it is to treat them with kindness and compassion.
