Winter Care Tips for Cats

Winter is well on the way. Your cat may have a fur coat on, but she’s still vulnerable to the hazards presented by cold and other elements of winter. As a responsible pet parent, you’ll want to take a few precautions to keep your four-legged buddy safe, healthy, and comfortable during the cold season. A local Carmel, IN veterinarian offers some winter care tips for cats in this article.

Keep Fluffy Indoors

Fluffy is much safer inside, especially in cold weather. If you do let your furball outdoors, make sure she has an emergency shelter, such as a repurposed plastic storage bin, and don’t let her stay out too long. Keep an eye out for symptoms of frostbite, which can make cats’ skin look pale and shiny. Kitties usually get frostbite on their tails, feet, and ears.

Proper Nutrition

Kitties that are well-fed will be much healthier, and therefore better prepared to deal with harsh weather. Making sure that your furball is eating correctly is very important! Senior cats may benefit from certain supplements, such as fish oil. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Warm Napping Spots

As you’ve probably noticed, kitties love snuggling up in warm, cozy spots for naps. Offer Fluffy a few soft beds to nap in. If you have a senior cat, consider getting her a heated bed. Pet tents are another good option, as they trap heat and can also keep your furball warm and snug.

Fire

Fluffy loves snuggling up by a warm, crackling fire for a nap. If you have a fireplace, use protective grates to protect your furry friend from burns. Candles are another hazard. Be sure to burn them in high spots where your kitty can’t reach them, such as wall sconces.

Cars

Stray cats often try to warm up by huddling next to cars. Before you start your vehicle, check your wheel wells and bang on the hood to make sure that there isn’t a kitty underneath it.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is extremely toxic to cats, and can even be fatal. Unfortunately, it has a sweet taste many kitties find appealing. Be sure to take care of any spills right away, and cover damp stains with sand or kitty litter.
