5 Great Reasons to Adopt a Senior Dog

Are you considering adopting a new dog? Have you ever thought about the benefits of adopting an old dog? In honor of Adopt A Senior Pet Month, which is November, an Carmel, IN veterinarian lists some great reasons to consider adopting a senior dog.

They’re Adorable

Senior dogs are just as cute as puppies in their own way. While a bouncing ball of fur is certainly adorable, the sight of an old pooch peacefully dozing in a sunbeam is just as heartwarming. In fact, we think Fido’s grey muzzle and serene expression make him even more lovable in his golden years!

They’re Calm

Older pets simply don’t have as much energy as their younger counterparts. This can be a very good thing, especially if you’re not a very active type yourself. Rather than dragging on the leash trying to get to that frisky squirrel across the street on his walks, old Fido will just plod along faithfully beside you.

They Need Love

Many older pets end up in shelters through no fault of their own. Some families coldly abandon older pets, or ‘trade them in’ for younger dogs. In other cases, dogs get lost, or lose their homes due to unfortunate events or circumstances. Whatever the situation, it’s very heartbreaking to realize how many senior dogs are in desperate need of good homes. Changing environments and losing a beloved owner can be very traumatic for poor Fido: he really just wants to love and be loved.

They Have Prior Experience

Senior pooches have often been pets before, and already know the do’s and don’ts of being a good dog. You may be able to find a canine pal that’s already fully trained. This can make things much easier for you!

They Don’t Have Much Time

Adopting a pet is a lifelong commitment. If you’re not sure if you can sign on for over a decade of pet parenting, consider giving a sweet older dog a loving home for his golden years. A senior pooch doesn’t require as long of a commitment, but will warm your heart with love and devotion, and brighten your day with doggy kisses and tail wags. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that you’ve saved the life of an animal in need.
