Common Mistakes Cat Owners Make

Cats are known for being self-sufficient. Kitties groom themselves, do their business in litter boxes, and generally spend their time playing, sleeping, and looking cute. Our feline friends are not entirely self-reliant, however: like any other pet, they need proper care to flourish. In this article, your veterinarian Carmel lists common mistakes cat owners make.

We know, Fluffy has her ‘Feed-me-I’m-starving’ act down perfectly. Your furball might be quite round, but she can still convince you that she is famished with a few piteous meows and an innocent stare. Don’t fall for it! Studies have recently indicated that our feline friends have fine-tuned their meows to just the right sound that will tug at our heartstrings. Carrying extra weight can cause problems with your feline friend’s heart, liver, kidneys, joints, and tendons, and even shorten her lifespan.

Free Access

Your cat love chasing butterflies across the yard, but Kitty’s outdoor playtime can be quite dangerous. Cats with outdoor access are much more likely to get lost or injured. They’re also more prone to pick up parasites, such as fleas, ticks, and worms. Keeping Fluffy indoors will help her stay safe and healthy. You can still give her a taste of the outside by setting up a ‘catio’, getting her a window perch, or putting a tower in front of a window.

Many of your furball’s unsavory habits are purely instinctive, so reprimanding her won’t work. If you yell at your furball for scratching up your couch, she probably won’t associate your reaction to her behavior, and won’t know why you’re yelling at her. The end result is you’ll only frighten your cat, which could turn Fluffy into a fearful bundle of nerves and trigger behavioral issues.

Exposure to Household Dangers

Many everyday items you have in your home are hazardous to Kitty. Medicines, cleaning agents, certain foods, household plants, candles, and open appliances are all dangerous to our curious little furballs. Be sure to keep all dangerous items and substances out of Fluffy’s reach!

Lack of Veterinary Care

Kitties often stay quite healthy, but just like any other animal, they are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases. Make sure to keep on top of any developing problems by taking Fluffy in for regular checkups, and staying up to date on her shots.
