Top 5 Apps for Pet Owners

The rise of the smartphone has changed our day-to-day lives in drastic ways, both here in Carmel and throughout the world. We can do almost anything on our phones: order pizza, check movie times, get directions … the list is endless. With so many apps on the market, it is no surprise that there are some great apps out there specifically targeted at pet owners. We’re actually quite impressed by some of these innovative and useful apps.

Here are our top five choices for apps aimed at pet owners:

Tagg is a pet tracking app that allows you to track your dog’s whereabouts through GPS. The app works through a little attachment you put on Fido’s collar. When you set up the app, you’ll go online and mark out the boundaries for your dog’s territory. Once you’re up and running, the app will send you alerts whenever your dog strays past those borders. Tagg is water resistant, so you don’t have to worry about Fido jumping in the pool with it. The app will even track your dog’s exercise.

Dog Park Finder

This neat app helps you locate dog parks in your area. The app searches your zip code for the nearest doggy playground, and provides mapping, directions, and a social media function to help you connect with other dog lovers in your locale.

The Petoxins app was developed by the ASPCA, and lists all plants and substances that are toxic to dogs or cats. This is great to have if you are shopping for a new houseplant and can’t remember whether or not lilies are safe, or if it’s ok to get a rhododendron as a gift for a friend with a cat.

Pet First Aid

This app could quite literally save your furry friend’s life in case of an emergency. CPR and first aid for pets is not the same as that for humans, and many pet owners are not equipped to provide emergency first aid. Pet First Aid can help show you what to do while en route to an emergency vet.

Petsie Dog Breeds

This is a fun app that can help you determine the breed of your dog, or someone else’s dog. Petsie also has a social media platform for pets, so Fido can even have his very own profile!

These are just a few of the apps available today. There are also apps for tracking your pet’s appointments, favorite foods, and medications, and apps for you to document what you spend on your pet.
